I found these Engrish Menus in a new bar around the Kubukicho area. The bar is in a great location, it has nice glass bi-folding doors that open up onto one of the main streets in Kubukicho. It’s one of the few places in the area that you can get a feel for an outside Bar environment with great looking passing traffic, and the beers are ¥500 so you can sit there for the whole afternoon drinking without busting the bank.

I always get a kick out of new Engrish. Enjoy!

  1. I can’t tell if ‘drought’ beer is good, like refreshing in times of drought…
or bad, like it dehydrates you.

  2. That was my personal favorite.. so fitting for a sunny dry day… but there was only two of us in the bar that understood the joke

  3. I was here in the mid-nineties as an oversexed JET, and back now as an undersexed family man, and it baffles me that the level of English is still shit. I swear, not improved one bit, in Tokyo, in tourist areas, in bars, where they might want our money, or avoid confrontations with big drunk Gaijin. You can’t bribe one native-speaker with your izakaya’s drink, or the company OLs, to proofread the English copy you had some ‘soushoku-danshi’ make who’s only used it in a classroom?

And have you ever noticed there’s plenty of Japanese people who can speak passable English (i.e., your Japanese friends) but none of them are in any kind of customer-service or sales job at home or abroad that might be a good use of their skills, and of benefit to one of Japan’s decaying companies or institutions? Oh, they mustn’t have passed the official Japanese certification in English, or such horseshit.
