Speed Up your Macbook

Or more accurately, bring it back to it’s original performance. As an Avid Mac fan I was very disappointed when my Macbook started consuming up to 3gig of ram for some of the most basic of tasks, and along with all that ram usage came a noticeable drop in overall usability. While the actual number crunching didn’t slow down noticeably, the user experience certainly left a lot to be desired.

One of the benefits of the Mac is it’s ability to stay logged in and working for days and weeks on end, and only rebooting when an OS X update occurs. I guess this is also it’s Achilles heal… As a long term UNIX user, and before that Data General’s own AOS/VS, I know the importance of running a tight ship when it comes to some system and kernel level maintenance, and with Mac being UNIX under it’s beautiful skin, essentially it suffers from the same fate of systems from yesteryear.

OnyX to the rescue, this has to be the one stop shop for system cleanup for OS X. Install, Execute, give it your Super User password ( root privilege ) , accept the defaults, a couple of reboots later and your done. The whole process, including download and install tales less than 10 minutes.

To quote their web site:

It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Exposé, Safari, Login window and of some of Apple’s own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.

Absolutely brilliant piece of software, so if your Mac is feeling sluggish, this is the easiest was to speed up your Mac. It seriously feels as though my Macbook has been overclocked.
