This post is about Nampa but comes in two parts.
The first part is all about the way early 20’s Japanese guys try to pick up similar aged girls, the word for this is Nampa. You can read all about this strange behaviour here. http://www.japanfortheuninvited.com/articles/nanpa.html
Basically it’s like going to the golf range…if you swing at enough balls you will eventually hit a good one…I wouldn’t have the patience to swing at 1000’s of balls like some of the young bucks around kubukicho do…
Please watch the following clip to get an idea of Nampa.

The second challenge is what the hell do you say to all these girls over and over and over again. Basically they ask them to go for tea, coffee or to sing karaoke…hmmmm…the way karaoke works in Tokyo is you pay a set fee for 1 or 2 hours which includes all you can drink…hmmm….now you get the picture.
But how do you say that in Japanese… there are many ways but I will share just one. I was told this by a freind just last week, it is in Osaka ben ( Osaka dialect ) but everybody understands.
In romanji it is Chaa no mahenka, japanese is ちゃーのまへんか as a gaijin punching out a phrase like this to your friends brings very amusing responses, the most common being “Who the hell taught you that????”… very amusing late at night drinking with 55 year old guys in mama-san style bars.

That’s pretty funny, knowing something intimate to the culture like that…cool.
