After a couple of years between Dentist visits, caused by the transition to Japan for work, late last year I decided to head down and get a check-up and book in for some whitening to help reverse my aging process, or was that to stimulate my vanity….anyhow, I ended up at the dentist.
Now Dentists in Australia are a special breed, the have the longest booking lead times of any profession I know, they charge like everyday is bonus day and generally leave your mouth sore, swollen and dribbling for the next hour… generally not a pleasent experience all round.
Well, the visit to my Japanese Dentist was quite the reverse experience. First of all the check up is actually a check up, very thorough and basically preparation for the next several weeks. I started with two out my three pre-paid whitening treatments, all up $90USD for the three. The third visit involved my first cavity repair, and as she went for the teeth with the drill I was thinking…. didn’t we forget the copious amounts of anesthetic I am used too… no no no… apparently I didn’t need it, and she was right… didn’t hurt a bit. Great! After the whole procedure was done, about 30mins, I get to the cashier, that will be $8USD thank you…Brilliant! I will be back.
Over the course of 7 more visits, including my last whitening treatment, I was told my cavities were only minor and I only needed anesthetic for one of them. It also included removing all my old Amalgam fillings and replacing with nice white fillings. I was told I’m all done, see you in 6 months for a check up…sweet… lets have a look…..ooops, theres one more Amalgam I want removed, even though she said it looked ok, she agreed and began to remove the Amalgam… that was last Thursday….
Well, not quite the fun experience I had expected, as it was a back tooth and quite a deep Amalgam filling I forced her to shoot me up with the happy gear because I knew it would hurt, it just had too… 45 minutes later and two more rounds of legal drugs she was ready to begin filling when I heard her say in Japanese the exact words I didn’t want to here… you will have to come back…..OMG! after careful explaining the next steps were to ba as follows…. I will take a mouth cast now, you will choose the color of the precast filling and you will have a temporary filling until next visit….OMG!
Well, after I had settled down and gotten over my anxiety I guess what has to be done has to be done… only 3 more days with this annoying filling in my tooth then I will be 100%
For those of you who are worried about the Dentist in Japan, don’t, My dentist, 万里清水, is terrific and I have spent less than $100 on my teeth(excluding the whitening), and they will be 100% filling free and all white as nature intended.
If you need a good dentist, and only speak English, then I strongly recommend the Shimizu Dental Clinic, by far the best Dentist Clinic and Dentist I have ever been too.

Wow, I didn’t know you were getting treatment. I should go to see her and get my fangs checked.
Very amusing edit of my comment Paul ….
I had noticed you corrected a spelling mistake in a subsequent comment, so I consolidated…
