Japanese Cherry BlossomThe cherry blossom, Sakura 桜 or 櫻, is a well-known and ubiquitous symbol of Japan, are represented on all manner of consumer goods, including kimono, stationery, and dishware. Cherry Blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art, and are associated with both samurai and kamikaze. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled “Sakura”, as well as a number of pop songs.

Sakura (桜 or 櫻) is the Japanese name for ornamental cherry trees, Prunus serrulata, and their cherry blossoms. Cherry fruit (known as sakuranbo) come from a different species of tree.

In Japan we celebrate this time of the year with Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees. Cherry blossom viewing has been a Japanese custom since the 7th century when the aristocrats enjoyed looking at the cherry blossoms and wrote poems, People drink, eat, and sing during the day and night.

I took the following photo along the river near my house. I get to enjoy these  Japanese Cherry Blossoms every day walking to the train station for about two weeks.

I took the next photo at Ueno park, it is a spacious public park located in the Ueno section of Taito-ku. Right next to Ueno station.

  1. Very pretty, Paul :)

I’m wondering, do they give off a fragrance? It would be nice to walk through that.

  2. thanks Mariam, actually you don’t notice any smell but they do have a very slight fragrance. What people tend to do(alcohol induced of course) is to place a nice specimen in their glass of wine, makes for a great photo. It really is beautiful to see them everywhere, and certainly a good time of year to visit Japan. If you ever head down this way I’m sure Neil and I could give you enough sight seeing destinations and maybe drag you to some crazy Japanese functions. :-)
